According to Karra, giving through a DAF can provide a large tax deduction up front and create an avenue for philanthropic giving over a lifetime and beyond. The DAF, established at a public charity, allows donors to contribute as often as they like and recommend grants whenever it makes sense for their overall giving strategy. “It’s designed to help people have the time to be thoughtful about their philanthropic goals and give to various organizations with one simple online tool,” she notes. “Administratively, it’s also easier, much like setting up a charitable checking account.”
Donating highly appreciated assets, such as stocks, real estate, or artwork, is another popular year-end giving strategy. Directing funds to an existing foundation or DAF is also something to consider on an annual basis. Karra cautions, however, that setting up a new private foundation takes more lead time and should be pursued well before the end of the year.
Charitable trusts are an option for making tax-efficient contributions to charity while still providing for future generations. One kind of trust, the charitable lead trust, sends an income stream to the charity now and provides for heirs with the remainder of the funds after a set number of years or when the owner dies, for example. Karra explains these kinds of trusts can be a great way to demonstrate what giving looks like for their family. Another option, a charitable remainder trust, provides funds for beneficiaries now, typically over a defined number of years, and the remainder of the funds are given to charity.
